As old man winter puts his arms around us for the first time this weekend, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at a warmer time.
The summer.
If you are a fan of baseball and live in Delaware County, then you have something to truly enjoy.
First, the Columbus Clippers are a AAA team (the highest level of affiliated minor leagues) and play at Cooper Stadium just west of the I-70 and I-71 split in downtown Columbus. Next year should be cool as the team will have its first new affiliate - the Washington Nationals - in a long time. The Clippers are also looking at having a new stadium and another new affiliate (the Reds or Indians as popular choices) in 2009.
But if you don't feel like driving all the way to Columbus, there is a hidden treasure in your backyard -- the Delaware Cows. The Cows compete in the MLB sponsored Great Lakes Baseball League against teams from Columbus, Toledo, Xenia, Grand Lakes, Cincinnati, Lima, Athens, Canton, Indianapolis, and more. The team is comprised of players that still have collegiate eligibility and are playing hard to catch the eyes of a scout and hopefully have that chance to play one more season in the sun. The games are laid back and the price is right -- $3 for adults in 2006 -- and the location is perfect -- Ohio Wesleyan's Littick Field -- for a summer day at the ballpark.
I serve on the board of directors for the Delaware Cows and it is a truly wonderful experience. We are always looking for community members to house the players and if you are interested either drop me an e-mail, call 740-990-9748, or visit the Web site.
